Please consider offering music therapy instead of just therapeutic music. Many people don’t know the difference between the two. Therapeutic music is limited to “live acoustic music, played or sung, specifically tailored to the patient’s immediate need. It is an art based on the science of sound.” It only takes 80 hours of training and 125 clinical hours to become a therapeutic musician. Music therapy, on the other hand, is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapists require at least a bachelor’s degree in music therapy, 5,850 to 5,940 classroom hours of training, a minimum of 1,200 clinical hours, and board certification before they are allowed to practice music therapy. Music therapists receive medical, psychological, and didactic training to assure that they are not only providing the best care possible, but to ensure the safety of the clients in their care. Having therapeutic musicians on site shows that you understand the therapeutic value of music. Please consider hiring a board certified music therapist to expand the scope of practice available to your patients. (2 months ago)
